What Is the FIRE Number?
FIRE stands for Financial Independence, Retire Early. Your FIRE number is the investment portfolio size at which you can stop working — because your investments generate enough income to cover your expenses forever.
The formula comes from the Trinity Study (1998): a portfolio of 75% stocks / 25% bonds historically survived 30+ years with a 4% annual withdrawal rate in 95%+ of historical scenarios.
FIRE Number = Annual Expenses × 25
Example: $40,000/year in expenses → FIRE Number = $1,000,000
You withdraw 4% per year: $1,000,000 × 4% = $40,000. Done.
